Out and about on foot

Walk by striding out and displaying confident body language
Walk facing oncoming traffic for safety and to observe possible dangers
Keep to populated areas or well-lit open spaces, and avoid obvious danger
spots such as dark alleys, waste ground and underpasses, particularly at night
Keep our bag or purse closed and any openings close to our body, not exposed. Rucksack type bags with the opening on the back are not a good place to keep valuables as they are easily opened without our knowledge
If we feel that someone is following us, cross the road to test our fears, and
see if the other person persists. If we are still concerned, keep moving and make for a safe, busy area (shops, pub, petrol station, public offices, Police Station, or any place covered by CCTV cameras and with people)
Regular walkers, joggers, and cyclists should vary their times and routes.
