Shut That Door!

Whether away or at home we should keep our doors locked.
And when we answer the door:
STOP and think; are we expecting anybody? Do they have an appointment?
CHAIN the door. Secure the door bar or chain before opening.
If a stranger then double check the caller’s ID.
Door bars or chains are really useful in dealing with callers. A chain allows us to open the door wide enough to be able to see the person outside and talk to them.
If they have an identity card, they can hand it to us. When we use a chain it means that a caller cannot easily push their way in.
While checking an identity card the door should be closed, it is not rude or unfriendly to do this, genuine callers will understand.
If in any doubt at all about the caller DO NOT LET THEM IN and contact the police straight away by 999.
The door bar or chain is there for us to use when (or if) we decide to open your door. For the rest of the time, whether at home or out, we should keep the door locked and the chain off.
